02 — The Tradition

The Ashtanga Yoga Tradition

Ashtanga Yoga
1 / 4

Yoga is a philosophy of life that cultivates a healthy body, clear mind, and awakened spirit. Practiced in its proper sequence, Ashtanga Yoga guides us to rediscover our fullest potential — physical, psychological, and spiritual — through steady breath (ujjayi pranayama), posture (asana), and gaze (drishti). With regular and devoted practice, body and mind become stable and strong.

The term Ashtanga means "eight limbs," described by Patanjali as: Yama (restraints), Niyama (observances), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (absorption). The limbs support one another — external discipline prepares the ground for inner stillness.

Vinyasa means breath-synchronized movement. Each movement follows the breath, generating internal heat through mula and uddiyana bandhas. This purifying fire strengthens the body, cleanses organs, and refines focus.

There are three main sequences: Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa), which detoxifies and aligns the body; Intermediate Series (Nadi Shodhana), which purifies the nervous system; and Advanced Series (Sthira Bhaga), which integrates strength and grace. Each posture prepares for the next, and each series must be fully developed before progressing.

Breath is the essence of the practice. When breath and movement unite, the practice becomes steady and meditative. Inhaling is divine inspiration; exhaling, surrender.

True progress arises only through consistent effort. It is said that where there is no effort there is no benefit. Strength, stamina, and sweat refine both body and mind, revealing clarity and devotion — until, as our teacher used to say, "Wherever you look you will see God."

03 — The Mysore Program

Ashtanga Yoga

Mysore style?

What is a Mysore program?

As starting point it is smart to know what Mysore style means and from where it comes. Mysore style is a way of teaching and a method that originated in Mysuru India. The name of "Mysore style" comes from that city. Mysore style is how the Ashtanga Yoga traditionally was teach by the acharya (teacher or guru). This yogic tradition helps to keep the body strong, flexible and joyful. The mind intuitive, greatful and peaceful.

A Mysore program is the regular follow up of the student learning the method. First the student learn the basics asanas (positions), movements, how to breath, where to look, simple alignment and so on and so on. And eventualy they are moved through different progressions called "series" as well as we start to go deeper. The system could look simple and there are many charts, books and teachers, but the fact is that all of us were thought and learned it in different ways and that we have our own perspective. Although there is a method we should acknowledge this fact. There is common ground and that is the magic of this practice.

A Mysore program is for anyone who wants to connect or reconnect deeper with their body, mind, and the self. The practice of Ashtanga Yoga in a Mysore program set up is for everyone from 18 years old or less to the infinte. It is a practice to keep the body healthy, flexible and joyful and the mind present. It is mainly for anyone who aspire to achive happiness and go deeper into the self. A Mysore program is a long-term companionship, guidance and assistance through the progressive learning of the system. It is a powerfull commitment and compromise.
